Tree pruning season

On a blue day, it is great to get out an prune the Apricot tree.  Problem branches are easy to see in the Winter. When working overhead, always wear your hard hat, gloves, and protective eyewear.

Pine tree in the wrong place

 <><>
<>
This Ponderosa Pine which will get 50 feet tall and 40 feet wide was planted in a space 4' x 3' in front of a town house.  It may have been a live Christmas tree yeas ago.  It is doomed by ignorance of a human.
<><>
You can see the branches have been trimmed to fit the small space.  They  will have to be trimmed every year.

Sloan's Lake

A week ago, before the 16" of snow, the lake was completely open.  Moments after taking this photo, the Bald Eagle roosting nearby did a flyby and all these birds took off.  They made a big circle and landed back here.

First Blooms of the year!

Brave little Snow Drops popping up just before the big storm hits.

The warm before the storm

The Koi are liking this not so cold weather.  The algae also.  Squirrels are all over the place.

Ground Hog Day 2012

A nice sunny, breezy day here on the Westside.   No ice or snow left.  A good day to winter water if you haven't been doing it regularly.  The crows are having a field day near Crown Hill Lake.

Commons Park, Denver

A good hike in Denver: walk over the 1-25 pedestrian bridge into the Platte River Valley.  You can walk along the Platte River through Commons Park or take the bridge over the train tracks into the Balpark Neighborhood.

Rust never sleeps, neither does algae.

A little warm weather can spur the growth of algae, even in winter.  January 16 and the algae is nice and green in my upper pond.

The river that runs past my hometown.  It can be placid or raging.  The natural beauty of Nebraska inspires my landscape designs.

Winter pruning

Here are examples of improper shrub pruning.  The multi-stem shrubs have been raggedly hacked off.  The proper method is to remove one third of the largest or dead stems at ground level per year as needed.
